Here is an excellent example of designing with the size of the straw bale in mind. The dimensions of the bales used here are 36″x18″x14″. The bales are stacked on edge, so the 36″ dimension is running horizontally, and the 18″ dimension is running vertically. The 14″ aspect is the thickness of the wall.

In this example, 18″ is the magic number. If possible, create spaces with 18″ as a common denominator. 18″x18″ is the size of a half bale, and twice that length is a full bale. The windows and doors are sized as multiples of 18″, as is the height of the wall. Utilizing proportions make the process of designing walls to the size of the bale much easier.
